One of his disciples was talking with another religious master's disciple who said, "Our master is a man of miracles. He can do anything he wants. I have seen many miracles he has done. I have witnessed them myself. What is the great thing about your master? What miracles can he do?"
And the disciple of Rinzai said, "The greatest miracle my master can do is not to do miracles."
Reflection
* Too many people today are taken by so-called 'miraculous happenings' ... they are gullible and follow 'leaders' who can perform 'miracles' or display 'psychic powers' . Good religious leaders guide us in our spiritual lives ... to reduce our greed, hatred and delusion and to grow in compassion and wisdom.
* Beware! Many have been taken for a ride by con men who, motivated by greed and desire, resort to occult practices and the use of psychic powers to lure followers.
* 'Miracles' would not free a person from Samsara. We need to practice the Dhamma - Dana, Sila and Bhavana.
* The true MIRACLE is the miracle of the Dhamma - the understanding, practice and realization of the Truth through the Buddha's Teachings so that we can attain true peace, happiness, bliss and freedom.
